Fresh clashes erupt in Sunsari; govt urges restraint

KATHMANDU: Fresh clashes broke out in Dewanganj of Sunsari district on Tuesday night, just days after violence between two groups had heightened tensions in the area.

According to police, the latest confrontation began at around 8 pm in the Dewanganj Bazaar area of Ward No. 3. Authorities said both groups had gathered carrying improvised weapons, and security personnel were making efforts to bring the situation under control. Police had not yet fully contained the clash at the time of reporting.

The renewed violence follows an earlier clash between two groups on Sunday night, which had already left the area tense.

Meanwhile, the government has expressed serious concern over the situation in Kaptaanganj, Ward No. 3 of Dewanganj Rural Municipality.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers appealed to all sides to exercise maximum restraint and maintain social harmony.

The statement, issued by Joint Secretary and spokesperson Hemraj Aryal, said the Ministry of Health had been directed to ensure free medical treatment for those injured in the incident.

The government also informed that the Ministry of Home Affairs has formed an investigation committee to determine the facts surrounding the incident. The committee has already begun its work and has been instructed to submit its report within seven days, along with recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“The Government of Nepal is committed to providing appropriate compensation to the victims and taking strict legal action against those found responsible,” the statement said. “The government firmly believes that no problem, dissatisfaction, or dispute can be resolved through violence or confrontation.”

The government further urged the public not to engage in activities that could undermine religious harmony or communal tolerance and appealed to people to refrain from spreading inflammatory or misleading information.

Emphasizing Nepal’s long-standing tradition of religious tolerance, social harmony, and unity, the government called on all concerned to remain calm and not be influenced by rumors or misinformation.
