KATHMANDU: The southwest monsoon has expanded across much of eastern and central Nepal and is expected to cover the remaining parts of the country within the next three to four days, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
As the system advances, heavy rainfall has been forecast for parts of Koshi Province, prompting authorities to advise caution in vulnerable areas.
According to the Department, monsoon winds are currently affecting all of Koshi, Madhesh and Bagmati provinces, parts of Gandaki Province, and eastern Lumbini Province. The remaining areas are experiencing the partial influence of westerly and local winds.
The Department said the monsoon is likely to advance over the remaining parts of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, as well as Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, within the next three to four days.
At present, the Terai of Sudurpaschim Province is mostly clear, while the rest of the country is partly cloudy. Light rainfall has been recorded at one or two places in Koshi, Bagmati and Sudurpaschim provinces.
This afternoon, skies are expected to remain generally cloudy across the country. Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in several hilly and mountainous areas, while parts of the Terai may also experience moderate rainfall with thunderstorms.
The department has forecast heavy rainfall at one or two locations in the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi Province. Gusty winds are also likely in parts of the Terai of Koshi and Madhesh provinces.
Tonight, generally cloudy conditions are expected to persist nationwide. Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at many places in Koshi Province and at several locations in the hilly areas of Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, as well as at a few places in the Himalayan region.
Similar weather conditions are expected in parts of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, with moderate rainfall and light snowfall possible in some high-altitude areas.
The Department has also forecast moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in parts of the Terai of Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at some locations in the hilly and Terai areas of Koshi Province, while one or two places in Madhesh Province may also receive heavy rainfall.
Strong winds are also expected in parts of the Terai of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, as well as in some areas of Madhesh Province.
The Department has urged the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds.
