Nepali Congress silent on Oli, Lekhak arrests

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has remained silent over the arrest of former prime minister and UML chair KP Sharma Oli and party leader and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak.

While the UML held an emergency secretariat meeting to decide its strategy following Oli’s arrest, Congress has yet to issue any official statement regarding Lekhak. The party has not called any discussion or formal meeting on the matter so far.

Congress is holding a ‘parliamentary orientation’ programme today for its newly elected lawmakers. A party official said an official position on the arrests is expected to be announced after the programme.

Yesterday, the newly formed government under Balen Shah decided to implement the recommendations of the commission investigating the Gen Z Movement that took place last Bhadra. In line with this decision, Oli and Lekhak were arrested on Saturday morning.

During the Gen Z Movement, Oli was serving as prime minister while Lekhak was the home minister.
