KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged all stakeholders to resolve tensions arising from the Dewangunj incident in Sunsari through peaceful dialogue and maintain communal harmony.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commission called on political parties, civil society, human rights activists and the public to seek dialogue to address the dispute between two communities in Dewangunj that led to violent clashes.
The NHRC said its Koshi Province Office has begun a preliminary monitoring of the incident, including the clash and the death of Om Prakash Mehta, who was killed in police firing during efforts to control the violence.
The Commission said it is gathering information from the Chief District Officer, district police chief, hospital administration and local residents as part of its inquiry.
NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel said the Commission has directed the government to maintain law and order, conduct an impartial investigation into the incident, take legal action against those found responsible, provide relief and compensation to the victim’s family, and ensure free and effective treatment for those injured in the violence.
