Education minister calls for structural reforms to improve higher education

KATHMANDU: Education and Sports Minister Sasmit Pokharel has stressed the need for structural reforms and improved teaching and learning practices to meet the changing demands of the education sector.

During an inspection of Ramswarup Ramsagar Multiple Campus in Janakpurdham on Sunday, followed by discussions with faculty members, Minister Pokharel said campuses must reform their teaching systems to make higher education more competitive, effective and student-friendly.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by one of the country’s oldest campuses, he instructed the campus administration to improve the quality of education and curb malpractice during examinations.

The minister also asked the campus to promptly submit details of its infrastructure needs to the ministry, assuring that necessary support would be provided. He further directed the administration to introduce an online billing system, strengthen campus sanitation and address problems affecting the library.

Campus Chief Prof Dr Basant Kumar Karn briefed the minister on the institution’s current status, ongoing reform efforts and future plans.

During the visit, Minister Pokharel also interacted with students, who raised concerns over drinking water, toilet facilities, sanitation and library management. He assured them that the ministry would take the necessary steps to address those issues.

Earlier in the day, Pokharel distributed sports equipment to students at Sankat Mochan Devsharan Ramrati Secondary School in Janakpurdham Metropolitan City-4.
