SC issues show cause order on petition against eviction of squatter settlements

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court of Nepal has issued a show cause order on a writ petition filed against the ongoing eviction of squatter settlements from riverbanks and public land in Kathmandu.

A single bench of Justice Shanti Singh Thapa on Monday directed the District Administration Office Kathmandu and Kathmandu Metropolitan City to submit written responses.

According to Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala, both parties have been summoned for a hearing on Baisakh 22.

The writ petition was filed on Baisakh 11 by Gopal Rana Pahli and 10 others, challenging the notices issued by authorities to clear settlements along riverbanks in Kathmandu.

The petitioners have demanded that no eviction, displacement or forced action be carried out without proper identification, verification and alternative arrangements for landless families living in such settlements across the Kathmandu Valley and other parts of the country.
