Sobita Gautam aims for policy reforms



KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Sobita Gautam, a member of the House of Representatives elected from Chitwan Constituency No. 3, is regarded as an emerging youth leader in contemporary Nepali politics.

Representing the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Gautam has been actively engaged in politics with a clear vision of elevating youth voices to the policymaking level.

Born on Asad 3, 2052 BS in Dolakha, she was elected from Chitwan-3 in the March 5 election. Raised in a modest family, she is the daughter of Krishna Prasad Gautam and lives with her family, including her mother and brother.

With a strong interest in education, Gautam completed her secondary schooling in Bhaktapur. She later earned a law degree and is currently pursuing an LLM at Kathmandu School of Law.

Even before entering politics, Gautam was actively involved in law, human rights, and public advocacy. She participated in youth campaigns and policy discussions, and has experience in addressing legal issues and rights violations through formal legal processes.

At the parliamentary level, she has contributed to policy debates and reform initiatives. As a former member of the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee, she gained direct experience in legislative processes, human rights, and judicial matters.

She has also worked as a legal consultant at the Nepal Health Research Council and has demonstrated leadership in advocacy, lobbying, and policy engagement through youth networks.

Gautam has also gained international exposure through her involvement in programs affiliated with the United Nations and as a member of the Health Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Her work in promoting public health awareness through dialogue and outreach has been particularly notable.

Advocating for youth participation, good governance, transparency, and policy reform, Gautam emphasizes linking politics with public service and results-oriented action. During the election, she championed agendas focused on development, governance reform, and creating opportunities for young people.

Before entering politics, she was also active in the media sector, notably as a presenter of health programs, where she contributed to fact-based discussions, countering misinformation, and raising public awareness.

In 2023, she was honored with the “One Young World Politician of the Year Award,” further establishing her as a prominent voice of the younger generation.

Gautam, who is also a founding central member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), represents a new generation of political leadership focused on policy reform, transparency, and citizen-centered governance.

Known for her clarity of thought, academic focus, and activism, she is widely seen as a promising young leader committed to expanding youth participation in building a prosperous Nepal.
