Sasmit Pokharel set to be Education Minister as RSP finalizes picks

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party has decided to nominate Sasmit Pokharel as the next Minister for Education.

Pokharel, an elected lawmaker from Kathmandu-5, has been finalized for the post, the Prime Minister Balen Shah’s secretariat confirmed. Earlier, he was widely expected to be assigned the Communications Ministry, but a decision has now been made to entrust him with the education portfolio following discussions with RSP Chair Rabi Lamichhane.

Pokharel previously served as an advisor to then Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah, working in the education department of the metropolis.

Party leaders believe his background and experience in the education sector make him a suitable candidate to handle the ministry.

A young leader under 30, Pokharel is among the new generation of politicians being brought into key government roles.
