Ram Nawami being celebrated with religious fervour

KATHMANDU: The festival of Ram Nawami, observed on the day of Chaitra Shukla Nawami, is being celebrated across the country today with devotion by worshipping Lord Ram.

According to Hindu tradition, Lord Ram was born on this day in the ‘Treta Yuga’ as the son of King Dashrath and Queen Kausalya in Ayodhya. He is revered as the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is widely known as ‘Maryada Purushottam’ for his ideal character, righteousness, and adherence to duty.

Religious scholars state that Ram Nawami, which falls during the ‘Chaitra Nawaratri’, symbolizes the victory of truth and virtue over evil. Devotees observe fasting, offer prayers, recite scriptures such as the Ramayana, and participate in ‘bhajans” (hymns) and religious gatherings.

On this occasion, special worship and rituals are performed at temples dedicated to Lord Ram. Large numbers of devotees from Nepal and India visit the Ram Janaki Temple in Janakpur, where fairs and religious programs are held. Similar celebrations take place in Ayodhya, India, believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram.

Scholars emphasize that the festival inspires people to follow the ideals of truth, discipline, and good governance associated with Ram Rajya, the just and ideal rule of Lord Ram.

There is also a traditional belief that observing a fast and offering prayers on this day brings spiritual merit and fulfillment of wishes.

Ram Nawami is thus celebrated not only as the birth anniversary of Lord Ram but also as a reminder of moral values and righteous living.
