Kathmandu DAO bans Holi stage shows, fairs citing election security concerns

KATHMANDU: The District Administration Office Kathmandu has prohibited the organization of stage-based musical programs and fairs during this year’s Holi festival, citing election security concerns.

Assistant Chief District Officer Muktiram Rijal said the decision was taken in view of the upcoming House of Representatives election and the need to maintain security and order.

In a public notice issued by the office, authorities have urged all concerned not to organize mass gatherings on open streets or public places, hold fairs and festivals, construct stages for musical events, or engage in the sale and consumption of alcohol. The notice also calls on the public to refrain from activities that contravene the election code of conduct.

The administration has tightened restrictions, stating that Holi celebrations must not be used as a platform for election campaigning.

It has also reminded the public that wearing or carrying items displaying election symbols or party flags, such as logos, stickers, clothing, caps, vests, T-shirts, jackets, shirts, scarves, badges, masks, lockets or bags, is strictly prohibited. The use of clothing printed with election symbols or candidates’ photographs during Holi has been completely banned.

Furthermore, in an effort to ensure that the festival is celebrated in a dignified manner, the administration has barred individuals from smearing colors or throwing water balloons at others against their will.
