KATHMANDU: Government representatives are set to hold formal talks with Prof. Dr. Govinda KC, who is on a hunger strike, today (Sunday) in an effort to resolve his demands through dialogue.
Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Chunamani Poudel, said that preliminary discussions had been held with Dr. KC as part of efforts to reach a consensus.
Poudel arrived in Dhangadhi on Saturday afternoon in coordination with Minister for Education, Science and Technology Sasmit Pokharel to facilitate the talks.
Poudel met Dr. KC, who is receiving treatment at Seti Provincial Hospital, on Saturday evening. Following the meeting, Poudel said the government had held informal discussions with Dr. KC and his aides to understand their concerns and that formal negotiations would begin on Sunday.
“We held discussions with Dr. KC and his team. We have been briefed on his concerns and his health condition,” Poudel said. “On Sunday, the Prime Minister’s Health Advisor, Dr. J.P. Agrawal, and the Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Population will join the talks, and we will make every effort to reach a consensus through formal dialogue.”
He said the government is committed to resolving the issues raised by Dr. KC through respectful dialogue and mutual understanding at the earliest.
Dr. KC has been staging a satyagraha for the past three days, pressing five demands. Following a deterioration in his health, he was shifted from Krishna Mandir Dharamshala in Dhangadhi to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Seti Provincial Hospital.
Kailali Chief District Officer Hiralal Regmi said he, along with Secretary Poudel, held discussions with Dr. KC on Saturday and inquired about his health condition.
