KATHMANDU: CPN-UML lawmaker Ram Kumari Jhakri has accused the government of protecting leaders from the ruling side while targeting opposition politicians through arrests.
Speaking during the special hour of Friday’s National Assembly meeting, Jhakri alleged that the government had withdrawn criminal charges against one of its own leaders while ordering the arrest of UML Vice Chair Bishnu Paudel based solely on a single individual’s statement.
She argued that the government was attempting to silence leaders of rival political parties by adopting tactics similar to those seen in Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Jhakri said arresting a person who could be available for questioning at any time was unjustified and unnecessary.
She also criticized the government for making “one mistake after another” while operating in what she described as “express mode,” warning that the administration was heading toward a crisis.
In addition, Jhakri demanded the formation of a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the incidents that occurred on September 8 and 9, 2025.
