Monsoon impact limited; hot winds likely in Terai



KATHMANDU: Monsoon activity remains confined to parts of Nepal, with hot winds and rising temperatures forecast for several Terai districts, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

The Department said monsoon winds are currently influencing all areas of Koshi, Madhes and Bagmati provinces, parts of Gandaki Province, and the eastern Terai of Lumbini Province. The rest of the country remains under the partial influence of westerly and local winds.

At present, skies are generally cloudy over the country’s hilly and mountainous regions, while the Terai is partly cloudy. Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning have been reported in the hilly areas of Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

This afternoon, weather is expected to remain generally cloudy in the hilly and mountainous regions and across the Terai of Koshi Province. The Terai of Madhes, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces will see partly cloudy conditions, while the Terai of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces is likely to remain mostly clear.

The Department has forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning at several places in the hilly and mountainous regions, with the possibility of light snowfall in some high Himalayan areas.

Moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is also likely at a few places in the Terai of Koshi and Madhes provinces, and at one or two locations in the Terai of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.

Meanwhile, hot winds are likely to affect some areas of the Terai in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, while temperatures may rise in parts of the Terai of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.

Tonight, skies will remain generally cloudy over the hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as the Terai of Koshi Province.

The hilly areas of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, along with the Terai of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, will experience partly cloudy conditions. The Terai of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces is expected to remain mostly clear.

The forecast also indicates the possibility of light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning in parts of the hilly and mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, and at one or two places in the hills of Lumbini Province. Moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is also likely in some areas of the Terai of Koshi Province.

The Department has advised residents in areas likely to experience hot winds, rising temperatures, thunderstorms and lightning to remain cautious and to stay updated through its latest weather bulletins.
