Tension erupts in Parliament after RSP lawmaker calls opposition obstruction ‘drama’

KATHMANDU: Tension flared in the House of Representatives on Tuesday after Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Jagadish Kharel described the ongoing obstruction by opposition parties in Parliament as a “drama.”

Speaking from the rostrum during deliberations on the tourism-related bill, Kharel accused opposition parties of creating disruption in Parliament for decades.

Defending the eight ordinances introduced by the government despite repeated postponements of parliamentary meetings, Kharel argued that Parliament should not be used as a platform for obstruction.

“The opposition has turned Parliament into a stage for theatrics while searching for the prime minister,” Kharel said, triggering strong reactions from opposition lawmakers.

Following his remarks, Nepali Congress lawmaker Narendra Kumar Kerung became visibly enraged and moved toward the front of the chamber, pointing fingers at Kharel and shouting in protest.

As the situation grew tense, Nepali Congress Chief Whip Basanta Thapa intervened and escorted Kerung back to his seat.

Opposition lawmakers appeared furious over Kharel’s aggressive remarks and his criticism of opposition protests.

“Now it is clear why the eight ordinances were needed. Bills stalled for decades can no longer remain blocked,” Kharel said. “Parliament is not a place for the opposition to obstruct proceedings. Instead of discussing tourism issues while the tourism bill is under consideration, why create disruptions?”

Amid escalating tensions in the chamber, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal suspended the House meeting for 15 minutes.
