Demolition of illegal structures begins along Manohara River



KATHMANDU: The demolition of illegally constructed houses and huts in a squatter settlement along the banks of the Manohara River in Kathmandu has begun.

The operation started on Sunday morning with the deployment of Nepal Police personnel and Armed Police Force personnel from Bhaktapur, according to Superintendent of Police Surya Bahadur Khadka, Chief of the District Police Range, Bhaktapur.

Authorities had earlier given residents time until 9:00 am to voluntarily demolish their houses and huts after they expressed willingness to do so themselves. Following the deadline, a demolition team equipped with a dozer from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City arrived at the site and began removing the structures.

SP Khadka stated that the demolition process began after most of the houses and huts in the Manohara settlement were already vacated and relocated.

There are 777 houses and huts in the settlement. Earlier on Saturday evening, seven large concrete houses had already been demolished.

During that operation, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel faced obstruction from local residents, and 22 security personnel were injured after being attacked by some squatters.
