133 inmates from Bhimphedi prison still at large after jailbreak during Gen Z uprising

BAGMATI: A total of 133 prisoners who escaped from the regional prison in Bhimphedi, Makwanpur, remain at large.

They were among 440 inmates who broke out of the prison after damaging its walls during the Gen Z movement on September 9, 2025.

According to prison chief Subash Paudel, 294 of the escapees have either voluntarily returned or been recaptured so far. In addition, 76 prisoners who had escaped from other prisons have also been brought back and placed at Bhimphedi.

He added that of the 39 foreign inmates who fled, only 13 have returned to custody.

Paudel further said that among those returned from other facilities, 50 have already been transferred back to their respective prisons, while 22 are still being held at Bhimphedi.

Security forces have been actively searching for the remaining fugitives, with some already apprehended from different locations, he said.

District Police Office Makwanpur spokesperson Pushkar Bogati said the search operation has been intensified to track down the remaining escaped prisoners.
