Nepal exports electricity worth Rs 5.92 billion to India last month

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) exported electricity worth more than Rs. 5.92 billion to India in Asoj (mid-September to mid-October).

Electricity exports increased in Asoj despite disruptions to hydropower generation caused by the August 26 flood disaster, which had temporarily halted power exports.

NEA Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha said electricity exports rebounded in Asoj despite the earlier disruption in supply. Nearly two-thirds of the total electricity exported to India was supplied under bilateral power trade agreements.

Meanwhile, Nepal resumed exporting 40 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Bangladesh through the Indian transmission network. According to the NEA, Nepal exported more than 630 million units of electricity to India during Ashoj, generating revenue of Rs. 5.92 billion.

Electricity exports to Bangladesh resumed last Friday after being disrupted by the August 26 flash flood in the Bhotekoshi River. The disaster damaged the Trishuli and Chilime hydropower plants, whose electricity had been approved for export to Bangladesh.
