KATHMANDU: Passengers who left Kathmandu Valley to celebrate Dashain with their families have begun returning in large numbers, leading to increased traffic pressure at the Valley’s major entry points.
According to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, traffic congestion has increased along several key road sections, including Nagdhunga–Kalanki, Jadibuti–Koteshwor, Jagati in Bhaktapur, and Dakshinkali–Pharping, as the number of returning passengers and vehicles continues to rise.
With the post-Dashain return rush gaining momentum, traffic police have intensified road monitoring and management efforts to ensure smoother traffic movement, ease congestion, and reduce the risk of road accidents.
Around 1,000 vehicles, including private cars, jeeps, motorcycles, and small and large public transport vehicles, are reportedly entering the Valley daily through its major entry points.
The steady return of passengers is expected to put further pressure on the Valley’s road network, particularly along the highways connecting Kathmandu with other districts. Traffic police have therefore stepped up surveillance to facilitate the safe and orderly movement of vehicles.
According to available figures, more than 576,000 people left Kathmandu Valley to celebrate Dashain between Ghatasthapana and Kartik 3 this year. Their return is now contributing to increased traffic flows at the valley’s entry points.
Authorities have urged drivers and passengers to follow traffic rules, maintain lane discipline, avoid unnecessary overtaking, and cooperate with traffic personnel to help prevent congestion and accidents during the festive return period.
