KATHMANDU: A low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal has caused rainfall across most parts of Nepal for the past two days and is gradually moving westward, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
Meteorologist Rojan Lamichhane of the department said the system, currently located over Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas of India, has been causing rainfall across most parts of Nepal. Its impact is expected to become more pronounced, particularly in the western parts of the country, in the coming days.
According to rainfall data recorded over the past 24 hours, most parts of the country, particularly Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, received light to moderate rainfall. Relatively higher rainfall was recorded in parts of Lumbini and Gandaki provinces.
More than 140 mm of rainfall was recorded at the Archali Meteorological Center in Palpa, while heavy rainfall was also recorded at several other locations.
The Department has urged the public and concerned agencies to take necessary precautions and remain prepared, warning of a heightened risk of landslides in hilly areas and flooding in rivers due to continuous and heavy rainfall.
According to the weather forecast, rainfall is expected to be more significant in Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces today, September 25, as well as tomorrow and the following day.
From Saturday, September 26, rainfall in the eastern regions, including Koshi, Madhesh, and Bagmati provinces, is expected to gradually decrease, with weather conditions improving. However, rainfall is expected to intensify in the western regions from Saturday night.
On Sunday, September 27, weather conditions in eastern Nepal are expected to improve significantly, while rainfall is likely to continue in Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces due to the influence of the low-pressure system.
Similarly, on Monday, September 28, some areas of Sudurpaschim may receive normal rainfall in the morning, with weather conditions expected to improve from the afternoon. Weather conditions are expected to become generally normal across the country from September 29.
As the paddy harvesting season is currently underway across the country, the department has specifically urged farmers, particularly those in Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces, to avoid harvesting paddy for the next one or two days and plan harvesting activities after weather conditions improve.
