Prime Minister Shah to face MPs’ questions in HoR tomorrow
Prime Minister (PM) Balendra Shah (Balen) is scheduled to answer questions from lawmakers during a question-and-answer session at the House of Representatives meeting tomorrow, August 26. According to the Parliament Secretariat, 11 lawmakers have registered questions for the session with Prime Minister Shah. Although up to 15 questions can be registered for the session, lawmakers from the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) have not used their full quota. RSP lawmakers are entitled to register up to seven questions, but only three have been registered. Lawmakers from other parties have registered questions according to their respective quotas, the Secretariat said.
PM Balen cites health condition for wearing sunglasses in Parliament
Prime Minister (PM) Balendra Shah (Balen) has submitted a medical report to the Federal Parliament Secretariat stating that he needs to wear sunglasses while attending parliamentary meetings due to a health condition. Parliament Secretariat Joint Secretary and spokesperson Ekram Giri confirmed that a letter accompanied by a medical report had been received regarding the Prime Minister’s need to wear sunglasses in Parliament. “A letter with a medical report stating that the Prime Minister is required to wear sunglasses has been received by the Parliament Secretariat,” Giri told Nepal Khabar on Tuesday morning.
New govt in Bagmati faces fresh crisis as Congress issues whip to boycott trust vote
Bagmati Province Chief Minister Kiran Thapa Magar is set to seek a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly on Tuesday, but disputes within the ruling alliance have once again cast uncertainty over the process. The provincial assembly meeting, which could not take place on Monday due to disagreements among the ruling parties, has been scheduled for 4 pm on Tuesday. Although seeking a vote of confidence is a constitutional requirement, the process has become complicated due to dissatisfaction within the ruling coalition, an internal dispute in the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), and a petition challenging Chief Minister Thapa’s appointment pending before the court.
Government must not ignore private sector, warns Anjan Shrestha
Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Anjan Shrestha has warned the government that neglecting the private sector could undermine efforts to revive the economy. Speaking at the inauguration of the NADA Auto Show in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Shrestha said the confidence of the business community has fallen to its lowest level in 36 years. He said the country’s economy is going through an extremely challenging period, with the private sector facing a sluggish market, weak confidence and an increasingly difficult business environment. “In nearly 36 years of my business career, I have never seen business confidence this low,” Shrestha said.
Youth held for assaulting woman police officer in Kathmandu
Police have taken a 27-year-old man into custody on charges of assaulting a woman police officer deployed for traffic management in Baneshwar, Kathmandu. The detained man has been identified as Raj Kathayat, originally from Tatopani Rural Municipality-2 of Jumla and currently residing in Baneshwar-10, Kathmandu. According to Dan Bahadur Thapa, spokesperson for the District Police Range, Kathmandu, the incident took place at Baneshwar Chowk on Tuesday.
Three JSP Lawmakers asked to explain vote backing Lumbini govt
The Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal has sought a fresh 24-hour explanation from three of its provincial lawmakers for voting in favour of the Lumbini provincial government against the party’s directive. JSP General Secretary Dr Surendra Kumar Jha sent letters on Monday to Santosh Kumar Pandey, provincial assembly member from Rupandehi-3(1), Hema Belbase (KC) of the Lumbini Provincial Assembly, and Bhandarilal Ahir, provincial assembly member from Banke-2(1). The party said it had instructed its lawmakers on August 17 (Bhadra 1) not to support the incumbent Lumbini government and to vote against it. However, the three lawmakers voted in favour of the government, in what the party described as a violation of its official directive.
Deuba faction moves SC to halt NC general convention
The faction led by former Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has filed a supplementary petition at the Supreme Court (SC) seeking to halt preparations for the party’s 15th general convention. The Deuba faction has argued that the general convention should not proceed until the Supreme Court decides whether to review the dispute concerning the party’s special general convention, which is currently pending before the court. The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing on the petition for August 27.
NA endorses proposal to send bill to committee for clause-wise deliberations
The National Assembly (NA) today unanimously endorsed a proposal to refer the bill seeking to revive a previous provision under the Nepal Special Service Act, 2042 (1985), to the Legislation Management Committee for clause-wise deliberations. The upper house received the proposal from the House of Representatives along with its message. NA Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal put the proposal to a vote, following which he announced that it had been unanimously endorsed by the meeting.
NEPSE falls 5.30 points as turnover rises to Rs 4.10 billion
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index declined by 5.30 points to close at 2,594.06 points on Tuesday. The market had dropped 19.13 points in the previous session, marking its second consecutive decline. Despite the fall in the index, daily turnover increased to Rs 4.10 billion from Rs 3.23 billion recorded on Monday. A total of 78 companies posted gains, while 187 declined and 12 remained unchanged. Among the sectoral indices, only the development bank and non-life insurance groups recorded gains, rising 0.08 percent and 0.36 percent, respectively.
Rain-triggered floods and landslides block seven road sections
Several roads across the country have been obstructed by floods, landslides, road erosion and riverbank erosion triggered by heavy rainfall. According to Nepal Police, road sections in Kavrepalanchok, Sindhuli, Makawanpur, Nuwakot, Ilam, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa and Rukum West had been affected as of 10 am today. In Kavrepalanchok, all vehicle movement along the BP Highway section between Khurkot, Nepalthok, Katunjebesi and Sindhuli has been restricted due to the risk of flooding. Vehicles are allowed to operate from 4 am to 6 pm.
1,938 industries and businesses shut down last fiscal year in Madhes Province
A total of 1,938 industries and businesses in Madhes Province were closed during the last fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26) amid the economic slowdown and other challenges. According to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of the Madhes Province government, 821 industries and 1,117 businesses were deregistered during the fiscal year. Meanwhile, 5,068 new industries were registered in the province during the same period. Of them, 1,101 were registered in Parsa, 777 in Dhanusha, 639 in Bara, 636 in Sarlahi, 554 in Siraha, 533 in Rautahat, 514 in Mahottari and 314 in Saptari, according to ministry Information Officer Upendra Kumar Mahato.
325 households identified as landless in Pokhara Bus Park
Pokhara Metropolitan City (PMC) has identified 325 households living at Pokhara Bus Park as landless after completing a detailed verification process involving landless Dalits, squatters and unorganised settlers. The metropolitan city had invited applications from people residing at the bus park as part of efforts to manage landless households. The applications were verified through investigations conducted with the support of the respective ward offices. According to Mayor Dhanraj Acharya, the initial applications included 200 landless Dalit households, 248 landless squatters and 116 unorganised settlers. The claims were subsequently verified through a process of claims and objections, followed by further field investigations.
