TULSIPUR: More than 338,000 people received eye care services through eye health programmes operated by the Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) in Rapti and Bahadurgunj during the last fiscal year 2082/83.
The services were provided through various eye hospitals and treatment centres operated by the NNJS. According to the programme, 14,477 people underwent cataract surgery, while 3,655 received surgery for other eye-related conditions.
The facilities also organised eye health camps and operated free eye check-up desks. A total of 97,669 people received free eye care services, including 4,918 who underwent free cataract surgery.
Shalikram Gautam, senior monitoring and evaluation officer at the Eye Health Programme in Rapti and Bahadurgunj, said the number of people seeking eye treatment has been increasing in recent years.
The programme has also been conducting public awareness campaigns to promote eye health and providing information on first aid for eye-related problems. Schoolteachers, female community health volunteers, media personnel, elected representatives and women’s groups have been involved in the awareness campaigns.
Gautam said students at various schools have also received eye check-ups and information on eye health.
Specialist doctors affiliated with the NNJS continue to provide regular eye care services through the programme.
