Monsoon remains active; heavy rain expected today



KATHMANDU: Monsoon winds are currently influencing weather conditions across Nepal, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

The Department said the monsoon trough lies north of its average position over western Nepal and near its average position in the eastern part of the country.

Skies are generally cloudy nationwide, with light to moderate rainfall occurring at a few places in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in the hilly areas of Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali provinces.

This afternoon, the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy over the Himalayan and hilly regions. The Tarai of Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces will also remain generally cloudy, while the Tarai of Koshi and Madhesh provinces is expected to be partly cloudy.

Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at some places in the hilly and mountainous regions and at a few places in the Tarai. Heavy rainfall is possible at one or two places in the hilly areas of Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali provinces.

Tonight, skies will remain generally cloudy across the country. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely at some places in the hilly and mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, and at a few places in Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Similar weather is expected in the Tarai, with rainfall forecast at some places in Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, a few places in Koshi and Madhesh provinces, and one or two places in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces. Heavy rainfall is also likely at one or two places in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.

The Department has urged the public to remain alert for possible disasters such as flash floods, floods, landslides and soil erosion during the monsoon season.

It said adverse weather could affect daily life, agriculture, health services, tourism, mountaineering, and road and air transportation, and advised people to follow the department’s latest weather updates and take necessary precautions.
