Two more arrested in fake rescue scam

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police have arrested two more individuals for their alleged involvement in conducting fake rescue operations in the mountaineering sector.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police apprehended Rajendra Bahadur Singh, 56, former vice-president of the Air Service Operators Association, and Sandeep Tiwari, 28, a representative of Royal Holidays Adventure and Travel Company in Thamel.

Singh, a resident of Kathmandu Metropolitan City–31, was taken into custody today, while Tiwari, a resident of Jwalamukhi Rural Municipality–2 in Dhading district, was detained last Tuesday.

CIB spokesperson Shiva Kumar Shrestha informed RSS that a total of nine individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the scam.

According to Shrestha, those arrested are affiliated with trekking agencies, rescue companies, a hospital, Nepal-based staff of foreign insurance companies, and shareholder-operators of helicopter companies.

The bureau stated that its investigation found the accused had falsely claimed to rescue foreign tourists who allegedly fell ill during high-altitude treks. These fabricated incidents were reportedly used to fraudulently obtain insurance payouts and generate unlawful financial gains.
