Jhulaghat border checkpoint to remain closed for three days

BAITADI: The Jhulaghat border checkpoint in Baitadi, which connects Nepal with India, will remain closed for three days in view of the upcoming elections.

Chief District Officer Krishna Thapa said the checkpoint will be sealed 72 hours prior to voting. According to him, the Jhulaghat border point will be closed from 12:00 pm on March 2 until 12:00 pm on March 5 to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, and secure environment.

The District Security Committee stated that heightened security measures have been implemented along the district’s 31-kilometer border with India. Surveillance has been intensified through Border Outposts (BOPs) operated by the Armed Police Force in the area.

As boats are commonly used to cross the Mahakali River at various ghats in the Tallosorad region, movement through all such crossing points will also be suspended during the election period, Thapa added.

Authorities noted that a similar 72-hour closure was enforced during the previous elections. However, in case of urgent necessity, the border may be reopened temporarily through mutual coordination between the two countries.
