Govt mulling odd-even traffic system to curb fuel use

KATHMANDU: The government has indicated that it could implement an odd-even vehicle system to help manage fuel consumption amid ongoing supply challenges.

Speaking to the media after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration Pratibha Rawal said the government has already taken steps to promote energy conservation.

She noted that fuel use among senior officials has been restricted and tighter controls are in place. “We have already reduced fuel consumption for high-ranking officials, and if needed, an odd-even system will also be implemented,” Minister Rawal said.

The minister encouraged the public to adopt energy-saving measures, such as working from home where feasible and increasing the use of electric vehicles.

She also highlighted progress on legal frameworks for long-term vehicle conversion and said preparations are being made for an ethanol policy. “Expanding infrastructure for electric vehicles remains a government priority,” she added.

Minister Rawal emphasized that the government is transparent and sensitive to public concerns. “We recognize the difficulties faced by citizens and are committed to openness. Everyone is urged to conserve energy and use resources wisely,” she said.
