Home Minister meets survivours of various incidents at RSP office
Home Minister Sudan Gurung has arrived at the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) central office in Banasthali as part of a programme to hear public grievances. A large crowd gathered at the RSP office after the minister arrived on Monday evening. Gurung is meeting with people injured during the Gen Z movement, ride-sharing drivers, survivours of truck accidents and others affected by various incidents. The victims had gathered at the RSP office after learning that the home minister would attend a discussion programme organised by the party on citizens, policy and leadership.
Speaker Aryal directs removal of un-parliamentary statements
Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal has directed the Federal Parliament Secretariat to delete un-parliamentary statements made by members of parliament in the previous meetings. He directed the secretariat staffers to remove the statement made by Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) MP Indira Rana Magar and CPN (UML) MP Ram Bahadur Thapa from the records of the Parliament. In today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Speaker Aryal drew the attention of the MPs not to make statements in the House by linking the issue of governance practices of neighboring and friendly countries to Nepal’s governance practices with the intention of giving a wrong interpretation.
SC orders halt to Himalayan Life CEO appointment process
The Supreme Court has issued a short-term interim order directing Himalayan Life Insurance Limited not to implement its notice calling for applications for the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). A single bench of Justice Tek Prasad Dhungana issued the order while hearing a writ petition filed by the company’s current CEO, Kapil Kumar Dahal. Dahal was appointed CEO of Himalayan Life Insurance for a four-year term on October 30, 2025. However, he was automatically suspended after being taken into custody for investigation in connection with an alleged offence under the Securities Act, 2063. He was later released on bail on August 7, 2026, following a Kathmandu District Court order and is currently appearing before the court as required.
Ranju Darshana calls for mandatory sex education from grades 1 to 12
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Ranju Darshana has called on the government to make sex education mandatory from Grades 1 to 12 to help reduce sexual violence against children and women. Speaking in Parliament, Ranju said age-appropriate and scientifically based sex education should be incorporated into school textbooks and taught mandatorily from Grade 1 through Grade 12. She also called for strengthening Nepal’s forensic capacity to make investigations into sexual crimes more effective. Ranju stressed the need to enhance the investigative capacity of police personnel who reach crime scenes and urged the government to introduce special programmes for this purpose.
Harka questions whether Nepal’s laws are weak or those enforcing them
Shram Sanskriti Party Chair Harkaraj Sampang has questioned whether Nepal’s laws are weak or the people responsible for enforcing them are incapable. Speaking during the special session of the House of Representatives on Monday, Sampang questioned the effectiveness of Nepal’s legal system. “Is our country’s law weak, or are the people enforcing the law?” Sampang asked. Comparing the situation to a vehicle, he questioned whether the problem lies with the vehicle itself or with the person unable to drive it properly. Sampang also expressed anger over the government’s inability to bring home the bodies of Nepali migrant workers who die abroad.
Bipin and Amresh raise questions against their own govt in Parliament
Lawmakers have strongly questioned the government over the rape and murder of three-year-old Garima Chaudhary in Bara during Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives. Lawmakers from both the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and the main opposition Nepali Congress drew the government’s attention to the investigation, the agreement reached with the victim’s family, and the publication of sensitive videos involving the victim’s family and the accused. RSP General Secretary and lawmaker Bipin Acharya expressed concern over a video of Garima’s parents being recorded at the Home Ministry and later made public.
Policeman arrested for recording and sharing confession video in Garima Chaudhary murder case
A police officer has been arrested for recording a video of a teenager’s alleged confession in the rape and murder case of Garima Chaudhary and sharing it on social media. Bara District Police Office Superintendent of Police Narendra Kunwar said the officer has been taken into custody and a criminal investigation has been launched. According to police, five officers were present when the video was recorded. Investigators are also examining the roles of the other officers involved. Police said they are investigating how the confession video was leaked and who recorded and shared it on social media.
Deuba files fresh writ petition seeking halt to NC general convention
Former Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba and former Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka have filed separate petitions at the Supreme Court in connection with the ongoing dispute within the party. Deuba has filed a fresh writ petition seeking an immediate halt to the 15th general convention announced by the Nepali Congress. Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Koirala confirmed that a supplementary petition has also been filed on behalf of Khadka. The working committee led by Gagan Thapa, which was elected at the party’s special general convention, has already published the schedule for the 15th general convention.
Foreign Minister Khanal to visit Serbia for NAM meeting
Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal is scheduled to visit Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, on August 30 to attend a high-level commemorative meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Khanal will lead a three-member Nepali delegation to the meeting, which is scheduled to take place in Belgrade on August 31 and September 1. The first NAM summit was held in Belgrade in 1961. This year’s high-level commemorative meeting is being organised in Belgrade to mark the 65th anniversary of the movement.
RPP Chair Lingden recommends dismissal of three RPP ministers in Bagmati Province
Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden has recommended the dismissal of three party ministers serving in the Bagmati provincial government. Lingden has written to the Election Commission and the Provincial Assembly Secretariat, seeking the dismissal of ministers Raju Bista, Rajendra Prajapati and Gir Bahadur Tamang for joining the provincial government against the party’s central decision. The party said disciplinary action was initiated after the three ministers failed to respond to requests for clarification. Meanwhile, RPP’s Bagmati provincial parliamentary party leader Uddhav Thapa has also already faced disciplinary action.
SC orders police to appear with items seized from Durga Prasai’s house
The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered police to submit a written response explaining the reasons for searching the residence of campaigner Durga Prasai. A single bench of Justice Nripdhoj Niraula, hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Prasai’s wife, Uma Prasai, on Monday, directed the defendants to submit their written response within 24 hours, excluding travel time. The court also ordered the police to appear with the items seized during the search of Prasai’s residence. Police had searched Prasai’s house on August 20.
Koshi Chief Minister Karki secures vote of confidence with 57 votes
Koshi Province Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki has secured a vote of confidence from the Provincial Assembly. He received 57 votes in his favour during Monday’s voting. Members of the provincial assemblies from the CPN-UML and the Nepali Communist Party voted in favour of Chief Minister Karki. The Koshi Provincial Assembly has 40 UML members and 17 members from the Nepali Communist Party. All members of both parties voted in Karki’s favour, giving him a total of 57 votes. Members of the Nepali Congress voted against the confidence motion. Although the Congress has 29 members in the Provincial Assembly, only 22 voted against Karki.
Finance Minister for specifying disqualification of BFIs’ directors in BAFIA itself
Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle has said that if the rules about the disqualification of directors of banks and financial institutions are kept only in the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, it would create a legal contradiction, so there should be clear provisions about the matter in the Bank and Financial Institution Act (BAFIA) itself. During the clause-wise discussions on the Nepal Rastra Bank (Third Amendment) Bill, 2083 in today’s meeting of the Finance Committee, the House of Representatives, Finance Minister Wagle mentioned that the related issues should be addressed in the relevant act itself. He stated that the Ministry of Finance has sent a proposal to the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs to amend the relevant provisions of the BAFIA.
Minister Chaudhary pledges to make Lal Commission report public
Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary has pledged to make public the Lal Commission report on the Tikapur incident, saying the truth must be established to ensure a just resolution. Speaking at an event organized by the Tharu Welfare Council on Sunday, Chaudhary stressed the importance of making the report public and addressing the concerns and demands of the Tharu community. The Tharu Welfare Council marks Tikapur Uprising Day every year on Bhadra 7 with various programmes. This year, it organized an interaction titled “Tikapur Uprising: Issues and Demands of the Movement and the Way Forward,” along with discussions on “Common Questions of the Tharu Community in the Context of Nepal’s Constitution and the Need for Amendment.”
Land Management Minister assures land ownership certificates for landless squatters
Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration Pratibha Rawal has announced that a commission will be formed to address the concerns of people displaced by the Shuklaphanta National Park. Addressing a gathering of displaced people, Rawal said the commission would be established within a week to address their concerns. She urged the displaced community to remain patient, end their ongoing protests and cooperate with the commission’s efforts. Rawal also interacted with landless residents in various municipalities and assured them that the government was preparing to issue land ownership certificates (Lal Purja).
