KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Ranju Darshana has called on the government to make sex education mandatory from Grades 1 to 12 to help reduce sexual violence against children and women.
Speaking in Parliament, Ranju said age-appropriate and scientifically based sex education should be incorporated into school textbooks and taught mandatorily from Grade 1 through Grade 12.
She also called for strengthening Nepal’s forensic capacity to make investigations into sexual crimes more effective.
Ranju stressed the need to enhance the investigative capacity of police personnel who reach crime scenes and urged the government to introduce special programmes for this purpose.
She also called on the government to take seriously the practice of portraying women as sexual objects in the media, advertisements, stories and films.
Ranju warned that women and girls cannot be kept safe if society continues to portray women as sexual objects.
She also stressed the need to further strengthen a culture of respect for women and girls in society.
