Over 181,000 new voters added as Election Commission steps up local polls preparation

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has added 181,367 new voters over the past three months as part of its preparations for the upcoming local level elections.

According to Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, the new voters were registered after the most recent House of Representatives election. During the same period, the Commission also received 18,622 applications for voter list updates.

A total of 18,903,689 voters were registered during the last parliamentary election.

Bhattarai said the Commission has intensified preparations for the local elections by updating the voter roll, reviewing polling locations and polling centers, and carrying out other election-related activities.

Preparations for the local elections were discussed during a meeting of the National Assembly’s Federalism Enablement and National Concerns Committee on June 18, where committee members held consultations with Election Commission officials.

During the meeting, several recommendations were presented to improve election management. These included announcing elections at least six months before the scheduled polling date, ensuring timely budget allocation, filling vacant positions within the Commission and its subordinate offices, upgrading the voter registration management system, adopting modern ballot-printing technology, and developing effective mechanisms to prevent the spread of misinformation.

The Commission has stated that these measures are essential to ensure a smooth, transparent, and credible electoral process in the upcoming local level elections.
