Sudden halt of ‘Lucifer Rising’ play sparks controversy

KATHMANDU: A theatre production being staged in Kathmandu has been abruptly stopped amid allegations of government pressure and threats.

The play ‘Lucifer Rising’, being performed at Theatre Nepal in Thapagaun, was halted suddenly despite receiving positive responses from audiences during its regular shows.

Organizers issued an emergency notice stating that they were compelled to stop the performance. It has been alleged that pressure from government-level actors was exerted, citing concerns that the play could negatively impact the image of Prime Minister Balen Shah.

In the notice, the organizers said, “Due to pressure from unidentified political individuals, tendencies, and groups, we have been compelled to stop the performance of ‘Lucifer Rising’. We apologize for the inconvenience caused to our audience.”

The play reportedly portrays themes of inner conflict, darkness, power, desire, and human brutality in an artistic manner. Audience reactions suggested that the production evoked references to the events of Bhadra 24, 2082.

Following the sudden suspension, theatre artists have expressed concern and dissatisfaction, saying the incident has created fear within the artistic community.

Previously, a film based on the story of the Badi community, ‘Lalibazaar’, had also faced legal challenges in court, reaching the Supreme Court before being allowed to screen after judicial intervention.

The controversy has resurfaced debates over artistic freedom and state interference, especially at a time when artists are reportedly involved in advisory roles within the current government structure.
