Govt to regulate colleges affiliated with foreign universities

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel has said the government is preparing new regulations to better govern colleges affiliated with foreign universities.

Speaking at a programme on Sunday, Minister Pokharel said the move comes in response to multiple complaints regarding the operation of such institutions.

He informed that the Ministry of Education has already prepared a draft of the regulations and forwarded it to the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Law for feedback.

Once the respective ministries provide their suggestions and approval, the draft will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for final endorsement, he added.

According to him, colleges affiliated with foreign universities have not been effectively regulated so far, and the new regulations aim to clearly define the criteria for granting affiliation, the standards institutions must meet, and the regulatory framework governing their operation.

He said that while Nepali universities and colleges are subject to regulatory mechanisms, foreign-affiliated institutions have not been systematically monitored.

Minister Pokharel also said the Ministry is currently advancing three sets of regulations simultaneously: the Education Regulations, the Regulations for Educational Consultancy Institutions, and the Regulations for Colleges Affiliated to Foreign Universities.

He further informed that the Education Regulations have been introduced as the Education Act could not be tabled in the current parliamentary session.
