KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Office has projected a decline in river-based disaster incidents during this monsoon season compared to previous years.
The local government said the removal of settlements built along riverbanks, particularly in Wards No. 11, 14, 31 and 32, has contributed to improved river flow management and reduced risk in vulnerable areas.
According to KMC Municipal Police Senior Superintendent of Police Bishnu Prasad Joshi, only sporadic incidents of river-related disasters are expected this year. However, he stressed the need for continued vigilance, especially along the stretch from Samakhusi to Khadipakha.
The metropolitan city has also prepared a strategic plan to address potential water-induced disasters during the rainy season. Vulnerable locations have been identified based on risk assessments.
The plan focuses on disaster risk reduction preparedness, emergency response, post-disaster rehabilitation, capacity enhancement at ward and community levels, and strengthened coordination among internal agencies and partner organizations to mitigate urban disaster risks.
Joshi also emphasized the need for a participatory mechanism to ensure urban safety, stating that collective knowledge, skills and awareness are essential for effective disaster management.
The strategic plan will be implemented in the upcoming fiscal year, with necessary programmes and budget allocations to be proposed accordingly.
