Nepali Congress announces Rs 500,000 support for national football captain Sabitra Bhandari

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has announced financial support of Rs 500,000 for the treatment of national women’s football team captain Sabitra Bhandari, popularly known as Samba.

Nepali Congress Vice President Bishwa Prakash Sharma said he informed the President of the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), Pankaj Bikram Nembang, via a phone call about the party’s decision to contribute Rs 500,000 to the player’s treatment fund.

Taking to social media platform X, Sharma wrote that the amount would be provided on behalf of the party to support Bhandari’s treatment.

“I have informed the ANFA president via phone that Nepali Congress will contribute Rs 500,000 to the player’s treatment fund. It is necessary for all of us to stand by renowned footballer Samba, who has made a significant contribution to enhancing the country’s prestige. I wish her a speedy recovery,” he said.

Bhandari had on Monday appealed for support through a social media post, seeking assistance for her treatment. Following her appeal, support has begun to pour in from various quarters.

However, criticism has surfaced on social media, with users expressing dissatisfaction over what they describe as a lack of initiative from ANFA and the government.

Earlier, Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) announced that it would provide free treatment if Bhandari chooses to undergo treatment in Nepal.

Likewise, former ANFA president and former national team captain Ganesh Thapa has pledged Rs 50,000 in support through social media.
