Baglung’s Sukurdung school overcomes classroom shortage with 12 new rooms

BAGLUNG: Saraswati Secondary School in Baglung’s Sukurdung, Dhorpatan Municipality-9, has added 12 new classrooms and eight toilets, easing a long-standing shortage of teaching space.

The school’s infrastructure has been significantly improved following the construction of a well-equipped building by Gorkha Welfare Trust Nepal. The building was completed within eight months at a cost of Rs 26.8 million.

Headmaster Tham Prakash Jaisi said the new facilities have made teaching and learning more convenient at the school, which has struggled with inadequate classrooms for years. The school, located in a remote area, currently has 431 students.

Previously, the shortage of classrooms forced the school to accommodate as many as 60 students in a single room. Classes five, seven and eight had to be divided into two groups because of the high number of students. Some classes were even conducted in truss-roofed temporary structures and under the staircase of a concrete building, according to Jaisi.

“Eleven classrooms were required to accommodate students from early childhood development to grade 10,” Jaisi said. “When student numbers increased in three grades, we had to divide the classes into two groups and conduct lessons in a truss-roofed structure and even beneath the staircase of a concrete building.”

With the addition of the 12 classrooms and eight toilets, the school now has adequate space for regular classes as well as facilities such as laboratories and a library.

Ten percent of the total construction cost was contributed through local labor, according to the school.
