KATHMANDU: Nepal Eye Hospital recently organized a free eye screening camp at Nakhu Prison, providing examinations to 1,226 people, including inmates, prison staff and senior citizens.

Of those examined, 907 were prisoners. The screenings detected various eye problems, including cataracts and impaired vision. According to hospital CEO Dharmaraj Gosain, 20 people were diagnosed with cataracts, while 421 were provided with necessary eye medicines.

Gosain said arrangements are being made to provide free cataract surgery to those diagnosed with the condition. In addition, 146 prisoners received free spectacles and medicines to support their reading and writing, while 92 people were referred to other health facilities for further treatment.

The hospital’s technical team also provided information on eye health, prevention and proper eye care during the camp. The hospital has reached agreements with several prisons to expand eye-care services for inmates and staff.

Nepal Eye Hospital also conducted an eye screening program at a gurdwara in Kupandole, where 214 people underwent examinations. Eight were diagnosed with cataracts, while 100 received spectacles.

Similarly, an eye camp held at the Aging Care Centre in Sukedhara examined 105 people. Nine patients were found to have cataracts, and 22 received free spectacles.
