KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli on Thursday accused the current government of being more repressive than the Rana regime, alleging that it has used excessive force against the public and protesters.
Speaking at a programme in Kathmandu marking the 48th memorial day of Nepal Communist Party founder Pushpalal, Oli claimed the government had acted in ways that undermined constitutional norms.
“The current government appears even harsher than the Panchayat or Rana regimes,” Oli said, accusing it of carrying out what he described as brutal suppression of ordinary citizens and demonstrators.
Oli also alleged that the government had disregarded the authority of the very Parliament that elected it, calling such actions unconstitutional.
“The government is violating the Constitution. Before talking about amending it, we must first protect it,” he said.
He urged democratic, progressive and leftist political forces to unite in defence of the Constitution, adding that the Nepali Congress should also work together with other parties to safeguard democracy while preserving its own political identity.
Oli further said the uncertainty surrounding provincial governments would be resolved soon, expressing confidence that both provincial and local governments would function smoothly.
Addressing the same event, senior CPN leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha warned that Nepal’s national sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and national interests were facing serious challenges.
Shrestha said the current situation called for greater unity and cooperation among patriotic, communist and leftist forces.
Other speakers at the programme also stressed the need for political parties to work together to protect democracy and the Constitution.
