KATHMANDU: With temperatures expected to cross 40 degrees Celsius in some districts, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has asked people to take preventive measures against heat waves and extreme hot weather.
Based on an analysis of temperature trends across the country, the Department stated in a bulletin issued Friday evening that maximum temperatures in some hilly and Tarai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces are likely to remain above 38 degrees Celsius over the next three days.
In a few places, temperatures could exceed 40 degrees Celsius, raising the risk of extreme heat conditions.
Meteorologist Sanjeev Adhikari said there is a possibility of moderate heat waves in the Tarai districts of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces during the next three days, while hilly areas may experience unusually hot days. The Department has therefore urged people to remain alert and take preventive measures to minimize health risks.
According to Adhikari, temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or higher have already been recorded in some hilly and Tarai areas of Sudurpaschim Province and in the Tarai region of Lumbini Province since May 20. In addition, several locations in both provinces have recorded temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius.
Districts on alert
The Department identified Kanchanpur, Kailali, Doti, Bardiya, Banke, and Dang as districts requiring heightened alertness. Districts advised to remain updated on weather conditions include Baitadi, Dadeldhura, Achham, Surkhet, Salyan, Rolpa, Pyuthan, Palpa, Arghakhanchi, Rupandehi, and Kapilvastu.
The Department also warned of possible health impacts from extreme heat and hot winds, including fatigue, weakness, excessive thirst, headaches, leg cramps, dizziness, fainting, muscle pain, and vomiting.
To reduce the risks associated with heat waves, people have been advised to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, remain in cool places, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, and limit direct exposure to sunlight. The Department also recommended wearing light cotton clothing, covering the head when outdoors, and using hats or umbrellas.
Similarly, the public has been urged to drink plenty of water and other fluids such as juice or sherbet regularly. Those experiencing health problems are advised to stay in contact with health workers and seek medical advice if necessary.
The Department has also encouraged the public to regularly follow daily weather forecast bulletins issued by the Weather Forecasting Division for updated information.
