Nepali Congress to elect parliamentary party leader on Friday

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress is set to select its parliamentary party leader on Friday, with discussions ongoing to reach a consensus.

A meeting of party lawmakers held at Singha Durbar on Thursday discussed the selection process, with leaders indicating that efforts are being made to choose the leader unanimously. However, if consensus fails, the leader will be elected through a formal voting process.

“We held discussions today regarding the selection of the parliamentary party leader. The process, including nomination registration, will begin from around 9 am tomorrow,” said Bharat Bahadur Khadka. “Whether through consensus or election, the leader will be decided tomorrow.”

According to the election committee coordinator and joint general secretary Prakash Rasaili, the voter list has already been published. The schedule sets nomination registration from 11 am to 12 noon, while voting is scheduled between 4 pm and 5 pm.

Despite preparations for an election, party leaders are still pushing for a consensus candidate. If no agreement is reached, vote counting will begin immediately after polling, and results will be announced the same day.

The meeting also discussed forming a parliamentary coordination board comprising subject experts to study legislative and legal matters. A proposal has been forwarded to the party’s executive committee for further deliberation.

The Nepali Congress has 38 lawmakers in the House of Representatives. Among the contenders for the parliamentary party leadership are Arjun Narasingha KC, Bhishmaraj Angdembe, and Mohan Acharya.
