175 ride-sharing drivers penalized in Kathmandu traffic crackdown

KATHMANDU: Traffic police have taken action against 175 drivers affiliated with ride-sharing services during a special enforcement campaign in the Kathmandu Valley.

The operation was launched in response to increasing traffic congestion and reports of unruly driving, according to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office.

Superintendent of Police Naresh Raj Subedi said the campaign focused on busy road sections, where multiple violations were detected among ride-hailing drivers.

Authorities found that many drivers were exceeding speed limits, operating services outside approved online platforms, and picking up or dropping off passengers arbitrarily. Several were also found neglecting vehicle maintenance and operating without essential documents such as valid driving licenses.

Traffic police also reported widespread cases of improper parking, including at major intersections and near hospitals and schools.

Officials have urged ride-sharing companies to strengthen monitoring of their drivers and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

Popular ride-hailing platforms operating in Nepal include Pathao, inDrive, and Yango, which offer services through both two-wheelers and taxis.
