KATHMANDU: The Election Commission of Nepal has received 85 complaints so far under the election Code of Conduct, with 54 responses obtained from the concerned political parties and candidates.
According to Mohan Raj Joshi, legal officer at the Commission, clarifications have been sought from 79 individuals so far, while six have been asked to provide further clarification. Complaints include alleged violations by political parties, candidates, government and non-government institutions, media outlets, and journalists. Registered media and associated journalists have been referred to Press Council Nepal for action and formal clarification.
The online portal Setopati has also been asked for clarification via the Press Council for publishing content claiming specific candidates or parties as certainly elected based on surveys conducted under the guise of election analysis.
At the district level, complaints regarding violations of the Code of Conduct are being addressed and necessary actions taken. The Commission is investigating complaints to ensure effective enforcement of the Code and to minimize violations.
The 54 responses received are currently under study, the Commission said. For effective implementation, the Central Code of Conduct Monitoring Committee, District Monitoring Committees, district officers, and respective election offices are actively engaged in monitoring compliance.
Under Section 32 of the Election Code of Conduct, 2026, Assistant Chief District Officers in all 77 districts have been designated as monitoring officers for non-financial matters, while Chief Treasury Controllers oversee financial compliance.
The Commission said it is working to inform stakeholders in all districts about the Code of Conduct and to secure commitments to follow it. District-level complaints are being investigated locally, and legal action is being pursued against violators as necessary.
