RPP’s Saraswati Lama files candidacy for Deputy Speaker

KATHMANDU: Saraswati Lama of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has filed her candidacy for the post of Deputy Speaker. She serves as a proportional representation MP for the RPP.

Party leaders indicate that the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is likely to back her candidacy. As the Speaker of the House of Representatives is already from the RSP, constitutional provisions require the Deputy Speaker to be from a different party and gender.

Following signs that the RSP may not support other major parties in parliament, RPP leaders began internal discussions regarding their nomination.

Earlier, RPP Chair Rabi Lamichhane and RPP Parliamentary Party leader Gyanendra Shahi held discussions, which continued today. “The RSP has indicated that it will support her,” said a senior RPP leader.

Meanwhile, the Shram Sanskriti Party, entering parliament for the first time, has submitted its nomination for Deputy Speaker. Rubi Kumari Thakur, 25, has been nominated by the Shram Sanskriti Party for the post of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
