KATHMANDU: Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal and his Japanese counterpart, Toshimitsu Motegi, held a meeting in New York on Monday on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
During the meeting at the UN headquarters, Motegi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property caused by the recent Bhotekoshi floods in Nepal. He conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and sympathy to those affected by the disaster, according to Minister Khanal’s Secretariat.
Motegi appreciated the Nepal government’s ongoing disaster response and efforts to assist those affected, assuring that Japan stands with Nepal during this difficult time. He also reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Nepal from immediate emergency response and relief efforts through long-term recovery.
In response, Khanal thanked the Japanese government and people for their condolences and solidarity following the disaster. He informed Motegi that the Government of Nepal is making every possible effort to search for and rescue missing foreign nationals, including Japanese citizens.
During the meeting, Motegi also reiterated Japan’s continued support for Nepal’s efforts to strengthen democracy and advance development.
He expressed confidence that the upcoming Nepal-Japan Festival, scheduled to be held in Nepal in November, would further strengthen the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
Motegi also pledged Japan’s continued support for Nepal’s development efforts in cooperation with the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, according to Khanal’s Secretariat.
Khanal thanked Japan for its longstanding support and expressed Nepal’s readiness to further deepen bilateral relations as the two countries mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
