Kathmandu Metropolitan City seeks clarification from 92 private schools

KATHMANDU: The Education Department of Kathmandu Metropolitan City has issued a 35-day notice seeking clarification from 92 institutional (private) schools regarding the cancellation of their permits or approvals.

The department has asked private schools operating within the metropolitan area that may now be subject to cancellation of their permits or approvals to submit the required documents and details within 35 days.

Education Department Chief Navaraj Dhakal said the notice was issued in accordance with Section 36 of the Education Act, 2075, which provides for the cancellation of a school’s permit or approval under certain circumstances. He said the department would initiate the process of cancelling the permits or approvals if the schools fail to provide satisfactory explanations.

The metropolitan city had previously decided to conduct on-site inspections of registered institutional schools that are no longer in operation and proceed with the cancellation of their permits.

A meeting of the Municipal Education Committee had decided to initiate the process of cancelling the permits of institutional schools that exist only on paper and are not actually operating.

The metropolitan city has also been advancing procedures related to the operation of institutional schools, addition of classes and subjects, changes in school name, location and ownership in accordance with existing laws and prescribed standards.
