Bidya Devi Bhandari steps up activity as pressure mounts on Oli

KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has increased her political activity at a time when pressure is reportedly mounting on CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli to step down from leadership.

Bhandari attended a meeting of 24 UML-affiliated sister organisations held in Kathmandu on Monday, organised in preparation for the 75th birth anniversary of people’s leader Madan Bhandari.

The meeting, chaired by Coordination Mechanism Coordinator Bishal Bhattarai, decided to mark the birth anniversary on June 28 through nationwide programs, focusing on ideological, organisational, and creative campaigns.

Party leaders said all sister organisations would be mobilised across the country to highlight the political ideology of Madan Bhandari.

According to organisers, the former President’s presence at the meeting signalled growing engagement in internal party-related activities at a time of heightened political discussion within the UML.

CPN-UML secretary Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, speaking at the event, urged that the birth anniversary should not be limited to formal observance but expanded into broader ideological outreach across the country.

He stressed the need to translate Madan Bhandari’s people-centric political philosophy into practice.

The Madan Bhandari Foundation said this year’s programme will be observed as a major political and ideological event, with a main function scheduled at the National Assembly Hall in Kathmandu.

The event is expected to feature addresses from top political leaders including UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Communist Party leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”, former Prime Ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal, as well as Janata Samajbadi Party leader Upendra Yadav.

Organisers said all sister organisations have agreed to support the main programme scheduled for Asar 14 in Kathmandu.
