Taplejung mountains turn silvery after heavy snowfall

TAPLEJUNG: After two days of rain, the mountains of Taplejung district have taken on a silvery hue as the weather clears.

The Tijure-Milke-Jalajle area of Maiwakhola Rural Municipality in Taplejung has been blanketed in snow since morning. The world’s third-highest peak, Kanchenjunga, along with Kumbhakarna, Pathibhara, and Manabhara areas, has also turned silvery. The opening of clear weather has attracted more domestic tourists eager to enjoy the snow.

The high mountainous regions of Taplejung have been receiving heavy snowfall since Friday evening. Snowfall that began alongside rain has transformed many areas of the district into a winter landscape.

Significant snowfall has been reported in Ghunsa, Phale, and Olangchungola in Ward No. 7 of Faktanglung Rural Municipality-6, as well as in Lelep. Locals have also reported heavy snow in Tokpegola, Maiwakhola, and the upper parts of Aathrai Triveni Rural Municipality, Milke-Jalajle of Maiwakhola Rural Municipality-5, and Timbung Pokhari of Sidingwa Rural Municipality.

Snowfall has also occurred in the famous pilgrimage site, Pathibhara. According to Rajendra Mahat, an employee of the Pathibhara Area Development Committee, snow has accumulated from Pathibhara Dham to Gurase Danda via Phedi Bazaar.

Along with the snowfall, temperatures have dropped sharply in the mountainous settlements. Local resident Phuti Sherpa noted that the cold has intensified especially in Olangchungola, Yangma, Phale, and Ghunsa.
