KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) has urged Prime Minister Balendra Shah to draw the attention of the international community by presenting necessary evidence and claims regarding disasters such as the Bhotekoshi incident and the impacts of climate change on Nepal.
At a meeting held at Singha Durbar on Monday, Nepali Congress Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma and party leader Bhishmaraj Angdembe presented Prime Minister Shah with recommendations prepared by the party’s Policy Research and Training Institute on the impacts of climate change.
Vice President Sharma said the meeting was intended to convey a strong message that the entire country, Nepali people and the main opposition party stand united with the Prime Minister as he prepares to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
He said the party urged the Prime Minister to highlight Nepal’s climate-related challenges before the international community by presenting necessary evidence and substantiated claims.
Sharma said the party had suggested raising the issue of Nepal suffering major disasters and losses despite contributing less than one percent of global carbon emissions.
He said the Prime Minister was also advised that Nepal should take the lead among low-carbon-emitting countries and engage in sustained dialogue with major countries, with restraint and diplomatic tact, for the effective implementation of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
According to Sharma, the party also urged the government to mobilize global solidarity in support of Nepal not only through formal addresses but also through sideline meetings, diplomatic lobbying and other initiatives.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shah said the document to be presented at the United Nations had been prepared on the basis of detailed suggestions and facts provided by experts.
