POKHARA: Police in Kaski arrested 56 absconding defendants during the Nepali month of Bhadra after they failed to serve sentences imposed by courts in various cases.
According to the District Police Office, the arrested individuals include 40 men and 16 women who had been convicted in different cases but remained at large without serving their sentences.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Birendra Kumar Paswan, information officer at the District Police Office, said the arrested defendants have been handed over to the court for the enforcement of their prison sentences and recovery of fines.
According to the police, the arrests resulted in the recovery of 11 years, three months and 27 days of imprisonment and Rs 2.289 million in fines.
The defendants had been convicted in cases involving cheque dishonour, forgery, banking offences, vehicle-related deaths and indecent behaviour, among other crimes.
Police have recently intensified efforts to locate and arrest individuals who have been convicted but remain at large. The District Police Office said 67 absconding defendants were arrested in Shrawan, while 115 people were arrested in connection with ongoing cases during the same month.
Meanwhile, 164 crime-related cases were registered in Kaski during Bhadra. Of these, 20 involved heinous and serious crimes, nine were related to women, children and senior citizens, 17 involved economic offences, and 118 were categorised as other crimes, according to the police.
