KATHMANDU: President Ramchandra Paudel has expressed his sorrow and condolences over the passing of civil movement leader Dr. Devendra Raj Pandey.
In a condolence message today, the President stated that Pandey’s efforts were mainly focused on freedom, rights, and the civil movement.
He mentioned that Pandey’s leadership role as a citizen leader in establishing and restoring democracy in Nepal, as well as in various struggles and movements, will always be remembered.
President Paudel said that it is fresh in his memory the leadership role Dr. Pandey played as a citizen leader in Nepal’s democratic movement from the 1990 movement up to the 2005/06 movement, having resigned from his government secretary post just a few months before the 1980 referendum.
“I think that in the nearly four and a half decades since 2036 BS, the role and contributions of his work will be remembered by future generations as those of a standard personality who contributed to nation-building from his own field and path. I believe that his dedication, conduct, and moral life will continue to enlighten Nepali society,” the President said in his condolence message.
President Paudel said that Pandey’s demise not only caused an irreparable loss to Nepal’s democratic movement but also meant the country lost a fearless and loyal democratic citizen leader who stood for truth.
President Paudel’s condolence message was delivered to Pandey’s residence in Bishalnagar by his press advisor Kiran Pokharel and Chief Private Secretary Avagya Paudel.
Dr. Pandey was suffering from cancer and he passed away at its own residence in Bishalnagar on Friday, July 17. He was 87. (RSS)
