KATHMANDU: Thirteen local governments have failed to unveil their budgets for the current fiscal year, while the remaining 740 of Nepal’s 753 local levels have already made their budgets public and begun the implementation process.
According to data uploaded by local governments to the portal maintained by the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, 10 of the 13 local levels yet to announce their budgets are in Madhesh Province.
The local governments that have not presented their budgets are Sukhipur Municipality in Siraha; Aurahi Rural Municipality and Kamala Municipality in Dhanusha; Garuda Municipality, Katahariya Municipality, Fatuwa Bijaypur Municipality, Maulapur Municipality, and Yamunamai Rural Municipality in Rautahat; and Chhipaharmai Rural Municipality and Pakaha Mainpur Rural Municipality in Parsa.
The remaining three are Dharan Sub-metropolitan City in Koshi Province, Kotahimai Rural Municipality in Rupandehi, Lumbini Province, and Shuddhodhan Rural Municipality in Kapilvastu.
In Koshi Province, 136 of the 137 local governments have announced their budgets. All local governments in Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces unveiled their budgets by the end of Asar, before the start of the current fiscal year.
Under the constitutional schedule, the federal government is required to present its annual budget on Jestha 15, provincial governments on Asar 1, and local governments at any time during the month of Asar in the Nepali calendar.
The local governments that missed the deadline have cited political disagreements and technical issues as the main reasons for the delay.
