One dead, eight injured in 26 disaster incidents across Nepal in 24 hours



KATHMANDU: A total of 26 disaster-related incidents, including fire outbreaks, lightning strikes, landslides, snakebites, and animal attacks, were reported across the country in the past 24 hours.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, one person died and eight others were injured in the incidents.

The authority said a 48-year-old man died from altitude sickness in Mustang. The man, who had been staying at a hotel in Marpha of Gharpajhong Rural Municipality-2, was rushed to hospital after suddenly experiencing breathing difficulties but died during treatment.

The authority stated that the disasters caused an estimated loss of around Rs 22.7 million.

The biggest financial loss was reported from a fire at the Pashupati Lighter Factory in Prasauni Rural Municipality of Bara. The fire reportedly broke out while work was being carried out at the lighter plant, causing damage worth nearly Rs 20 million, including destruction of the plant.

Fire incidents were also reported in Jhapa, Sunsari, Dhanusha, Sankhuwasabha, Myagdi, Rupandehi, Kailali, and Kanchanpur.

In Kathmandu’s Panipokhari area, a man was injured after a fire broke out while cooking at a hotel.

Lightning incidents in Chitwan, Tanahun, Palpa, and Parbat killed livestock and damaged electrical equipment.

The authority also reported road obstructions caused by landslides in Sunsari and Makwanpur.

Meanwhile, five snakebite incidents were recorded in Dhanusha, Bara, Nawalparasi East, and Kapilvastu, injuring five people, including children.

A girl was injured in a dog attack in Kathmandu, while a man was injured in a bear attack in Jumla.

According to the authority, most rescue and control operations were carried out with the support of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force personnel, fire brigades, and local residents.
