Media trial against me will not derail anti-corruption efforts: Sudan Gurung

KATHMANDU: Facing mounting allegations, Home Minister Sudan Gurung has defended himself against claims of misconduct, asserting that he is the target of a coordinated “media trial” and politically motivated rumors.

In a statement posted on social media last night, he said that individuals who have long sought to exploit public funds are now fearful, and are therefore spreading misinformation against him. He added that such attempts are meant to distract from ongoing actions against corruption.

Gurung has faced allegations of maintaining a business partnership with businessman Deepak Bhatta, who was arrested on money laundering charges. There are also claims that he purchased shares worth Rs 5 million following the Gen-Z protest without disclosing them in his asset details.

Amid these accusations, the Nepali Congress has called for his resignation and urged the government to launch an investigation.

Responding to the criticism, Gurung stated that the allegations stem from those unsettled by anti-corruption efforts, emphasizing that firm action against corruption will continue without hesitation.

“Those who have long had their eyes on the nation’s hard-earned treasury are now afraid. Media trials and sponsored rumors are merely distractions,” he wrote, adding that such tactics will not deter him. He also remarked on the scale of corruption, saying he had never seen such resistance when daily corruption reached massive levels.

On Monday, Gurung had already issued a detailed clarification on social media, stating that he is ready to cooperate fully with any investigation into the allegations against him.
